blue in the stream photography bio picture

Soli Deo gloria!

Blue in the Stream is a realized dream of sisters Sarah Doerfler and Bridget Koester. Thanks for checking out our blog! We hope it helps to get to know us a little better. We'd love to hear from you!

Sarah: professional photographer based in Richmond, Virginia, wife, mom to three littles, and runner. Lover of diet dr. pepper, peanut butter cups, blue skies in the fall, the ocean, the smell of a campfire, naps, a great musical, Sixteen Candles, and a great novel. Cries at goodbyes, love songs, Romeo & Juliet, pretty much anything else (according to my oldest nephew). Prefers not to fold the laundry, get up before the sun, or say goodbye.

Bridget: award winning fine arts photographer in Bloomington, Illinois, wife, mom to three (not so) littles, and walker. Lover of the first sip (only) of a dr. pepper, almond joys, reading aloud, the ocean, the smell of lilacs in the spring, eating ice cream anytime – anywhere, PONY baseball (x3), Places in the Heart, and a great novel. Cries at patriotic speeches and the Suave “stages of motherhood” commercial. Prefers not to be the one to order at a drive-through or do the laundry at all..

Sneak a Peek

So here is a sneak peek for two moms who are, I’m sure, anxious to see their darlings!  The first is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed doll baby, and OH MY, was she ever adorable!  Check out those soft curls!  I just couldn’t get enough of those baby blues.  Hold on just a little longer, Mom!  You are going to love the images, and I can’t wait for you to see them!

A couple of weeks ago, I had a high school senior portrait session.  I had a blast!  He was so confident strutting around downtown Richmond in a tux on a Saturday morning, and we got some great shots!  We’ve got big things planned for our High School Senior biz, so be on the lookout (and check your calendars Juniors!) in the coming months.

We are completely booked for the rest of 2008!  I have already begun getting inquiries for 2009, and we will open the calendar for sessions soon.  Keep checking the blog, or email me to get on the list.  I’ll send out an email when we open the 2009 calendar, and those lucky recipients will get first dibs!

Enjoy your weekend:)

welcome to fabulous las vegas

I just got back from tagging along on a trip to Las Vegas.  My husband was in meetings most of each day so I had quite a bit of time to myself.  I read a couple of great books, did some window shopping and engaged in the ever entertaining - people watching!  And yes, I’ll admit it, on several occasions I could be found at the roulette table!  I played each time for quite awhile and didn’t lose too much so I count that as success.

Inside the Bellagio Hotel there is, in true vegas style, an over the top flower display in the conservatory.  The theme changes with the seasons and now there is a rustic water mill, huge scarecrows, displays of pumpkins and gourds, and THOUSANDS of flowers!

There truly is natural beauty in Vegas:

One afternoon we headed out on a quick road trip.  About 15 miles outside of Las Vegas in the Mojave desert is Red Rock Canyon.  Yes, I just had to say “Mojave desert” - doesn’t it just sound unbearably hot and desolate?  Although it wasn’t at all hot it was desolate and breathtaking:

We have added an art and stock photography gallery on our main website.  Be sure to stop by and check it out!

Family photos

A couple of weeks ago I spent some time with a family who was so adorable!  I loved watching the interaction between brother and sister.  He spent so much time trying to get his sis to hug him.  She was having NONE of it!  He finally gave up.  I love the look on his face in this one:

They were both just so CUTE!

And check out the whole beautiful family!  Thanks guys; I had fun with you all!

Enjoy your Thursday,

My 5 year old Pickle

5 is big.  How did it happen so fast?  I can see so clearly that tiny little thing I held in the hospital room.  One night in particular was so sweet to me.  It was around midnight on the first night of his life, and the halls outside my hospital room were quiet.  Max had gone home to be with Cade for the night.  The nursery nurses had just bathed my little pickle (who had yet to earn his nickname) and wrapped him in that universal newborn blanket.  On her way out, the nurse switched on the bathroom light and told me she’d be back for him after he ate.  That small glow was just enough to see his bright little eyes, but not so much that it chased away the quiet.  He was so alert, and his then dark hair was sticking straight up.  I remember brushing his soft hair with my cheek and staring into his wide dark eyes.  I was hooked and totally in love.  I hope I never forget those first early morning hours with him.  And now that tiny thing is FIVE!!!!  Wow!  He is growing to be remarkable and wonderful, but part of me misses that tiny baby.  So quickly the time flies!  Ugh!  Happy birthday sweet sweet Pickle!

Cloudy days don’t stop the fun

I love the fall.  Most of the time the sky is that gorgeous crystal blue, and the air is crisp.  The trees have begun to change and the world is set in color.  It’s beautiful.  But we have had a couple of dreary days!  Ugh!  It almost felt like a Richmond winter there for a while.  On one of those days I met a sweet, sweet family by the river.  It was a cold, bitter morning.  But it didn’t stop us from having an incredible session together.  I love the part of my job that allows me to meet people whom I probably would not have met otherwise.  This family is really special, and I enjoyed my time with them immensely.  I feel so privileged to be able to share (and capture) a few intimate moments between family members.  Such sweet moments!  Here are some of my favorites from that gray day:

Enjoy the color in your fall!

Fall Sessions

We are full swing into fall sessions!  I had a really fun session recently.  Mom brought her two boys all ready for the “fall” session.  They willingly (and without complaint) wore their vests over their long-sleeved shirts even though it was one of the warmest Sundays in October!  These two guys made me laugh.  On the walk back to the car, they just couldn’t help being brothers, poking each other as they walked, kicking up as much dust as they could get away with.  They were polite and cooperative, but then they’d get in a little fun too!  I love that!  Boys will be boys!  I know, I’ve got two of my own…and let me tell ya, they are physical and scrappy (especially that little one!)  Anyway, here are two of my favorites from that hot, “fall” session:

Momentum Resources

Okay, so I am drowning in boxes here!  But I am long overdue in writing about some great people I had the honor of meeting not too long ago.  Whitney Forstner and Tanya Cummings own a great resource in town called Momentum Resources.  They help moms make that transition back to the professional world - part time and full time.  They contacted me to take some shots of them and their families.  These two gals know how to balance that ever-tricky work-life-family juggling act.  I had such fun getting to know them.  Check out their website (after you check out some of my favorites from the afternoon)!

pumpkins, pumpkins…

Well, it is definitely fall and there are beautiful pumpkins everywhere!

On Sunday the boys picked out our pumpkins at a church in town.  The youth group there runs the patch and keeps some of the money for their mission trips.  The photo below (taken by Lori Ann Cook) is my three boys getting ready to carry our finds to the van.  The image appeared in the front section of our local newspaper with a nice caption.  I’m so glad that she chose to publish one of all three of them!  (Hmmm…I think we’ll be heading in for haircuts soon!)  It was so exciting to open the paper and show them the photo this morning before school!

It was a gorgeous day - perfect pumpkin picking weather!

SOLD!

We put our house on the market at the end of May.  Our experience in home-selling consisted of one previous house.  When we first moved to Richmond, we knew where we wanted to live, and we were ready to buy our first home.  We spent several months of going through open houses the day they went on the market and they would be sold that day (sometimes even before we left the house)!  It was a crazy time!  The house we ended up buying we just happened to be driving by.  We stopped and flew through the house.  It was right, and we knew we had to act fast.  We called our agent from the phone in that kitchen to tell her to draw up a contract!  We lived in that house for a little over three years.  We decided to sell it ourselves and advertised our open house a week before it was scheduled.  We had a contract in hand as opened the door.

So this time it took a little longer.  After months of getting all worked up about our house not selling, I had just settled into the idea that it might take a long time to sell.  That was okay, I thought, I still liked our house and we had great neighbors.  It wasn’t so bad (except for the perpetual show-ready standard).  Literally, a couple of days after a conversation about just that with Max, we received an offer on the house.  The buyers wanted to close in just under three weeks!  Yikes!  We had to scramble around to buy a house then too!  We had had our eye on an old house in the neighborhood we wanted to move to.  Everything really just fell into place.  We took a last look at some other homes for sale in the area, and nothing really measured up.  So we put an offer in, and the owner was willing to go for an aggressive closing date too.  We hit some big stumbling blocks along the way, but I was (and still am) pretty amazed at how all of the big doors were opened at just the right time.  This house needs a lot of work, but it is wonderful!  We are all already in love.  The front door has an enormous fairy-tale lock and key.  I can’t get the boys out of the trees!  In the afternoons, we walk to school.  It is such a sweet time with my littles.  As my pickle says, we chat while we walk.  But I have also developed friendships with the bug guy, the critter-control guy, the phone guy (who knew there were once 4-pronged phone jacks?!?), the HVAC guy, the chimney guy, the crawlspace guy,…ugh!  It is a new adventure every day!  The sweet woman at the bug company has such patience with me, and she probably recognizes my number on caller-id by now!  Let’s just say I don’t do bugs!  Ick!

I’m sure I’ll post more as the renovations begin (hopefully soon!).  If you are in need of a realtor, give Jason Hester a call!

This is my favorite part of the new-old house.  I smile when I come in this door!

And the front:

Happy weekend!

window light

Sarah is spending her days shooting some fabulous fall sessions.  And as if she weren’t busy enough with our photography, taking care of her family, directing Sunday School, and the other hundreds of things she accomplishes, she thought her family could take a couple of days and…oh…I don’t know….maybe move into a NEW HOUSE!  Wow!  She has been swamped.

“Meanwhile back at the Ranch”, I have had a little free time to play around with the gorgeous fall light coming through our windows.  Thought you might like to take a peak.  Some of my boy’s favorite things:

This is a small pitcher that belonged to my great-grandmother.  It is chiped and tarnished, but I keep it on our bookshelves because I love it!  It makes me think of autumn.

 Enjoy this beautiful day!
